Thomas A. Ebert, 49, of Eau Claire passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at his home, surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends after living with cancer for the past two years.

Tom was born in Kaukauna on July 15, 1959, the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Staubb) Ebert. He graduated from high school in 1977. Tom received his accounting degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1981 and worked for several years as a certified public accountant. He received his MBA from UW-Oshkosh in December 1989.  He married Karla Kurth in Eau Claire in 1990.

Tom followed his passion for learning and teaching by becoming an instructor at UW-Stout in Menomonie. He also taught at Purdue at Fort Wayne, Ind., at UW-LaCrosse and at Winona (Minn.) State University. He was employed as the controller at Indianhead Food Service Distributors before returning to teaching at UW-Stout in 2003, where he was most recently employed. He had recently been honored by achieving tenure at UW-Stout.

Tom was always willing to help others. He was active in the Eau Claire Jaycees for many years and was scoutmaster of Park School Pack 183 and assistant scoutmaster and treasurer for Grace Lutheran Troop 36 until May 2009. He was also a committee member for the 2008 Blue Angels Air Show in Eau Claire.

Tom's smile was contagious. He enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and golfing at his family's cabin. His love of remodeling and his brother Greg's vision provided many experiences in home renovation for his close friends and family. He was most happy spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He enjoyed our many family gatherings. Tom's courage and determination to live his life fully is an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Karla; his children, Erin (Ali'i) Guzman, Brett Anderson and Katharine Ebert; two grandchildren, Bella and Bennett; his parents, Lawrence (Ruth) Ebert, all of Eau Claire; six siblings, Nan (Don) Bongers of DePere, Jim (Ingrid) Ebert of France, Mark (Diane) Ebert of Appleton, Mary (Chris) Hoff of Oshkosh, Greg (Pat) Ebert of Eau Claire and Renee (Jesse) De Witte of Carlton, Minn.; his sister-in-law, Brenda Ebert, and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Backstrom, both of Eau Claire. He is further survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Tom and Jeff Wilson were friends from junior high if not before. Tom was always a part of our life.  We enjoyed many nights of playing cards and Jeff and Tom talking or arguing politics.  I am sure that they are both playing cards and talking politics in heaven.
